The form result will depend on type and size of rods used (see image The Effect of Rod Size on Curl Diameter) as well as winding technique and product. For example, using a large flexible roller with an acid balanced perm and spiral technique will result in large, loose, natural, soft-looking curls. Using a small rod with an overlap technique and an alkaline perm will result in tight, consistent curls. Bear in mind that the tighter the curl, the shorter the hair will appear! The cut will also influence the type of form technique used to achieve the final hairstyle.
The classic perm uses standard rods or rollers to produce a full head of uniform curls. An acid balanced or alkaline-based perm solution may be used depending on desired result and hair type.
Winding the hair properly is a technical skill that requires experience to master. Not only do the angle and method of winding have an effect, but also the tension and the speed are important. Time is money for the hairdresser; additionally the client may well have an agenda for the rest of the day. It should take no longer than 30 minutes to wind a head for a classic perm.
